Petroleum spirit, nearly always simply referred to as "petrol", is a mixture of various lighter hydrocarbons with a boiling range between that of butane and kerosene. It is primarily made from refined mineral oil components and is used as a fuel for engines.
Lead-free petrol
Leaded petrol has been banned in the EU since 2000, with the exception of aviation spirit (avgas). Petrol engine manufacturers often specify a minimum octane number for their engines because use of low octane number fuel can result in engine damage caused by knocking. In contrast, a higher octane number enables slight performance or efficiency increases.
In addition, a distinction is made between summer and winter petrol, depending on local climate conditions.
